چکیده

[1] Detailed three-dimensional in-situ measurements of deformation at depth are used to examine the rheology of a 6 10 m block of temperate glacier ice. Assuming that the viscosity of this ice is primarily dependent on stress, the relationship between inferred stress and measurements of strain-rate above 115 m depth suggest a constitutive relationship with a stress exponent n 1. Deformation below 115 m is described by a non-linear flow law with a power exponent of approximately 3–4. A sharp transition between the two flow regimes is likely caused by a change in the dominant mechanism from superplastic flow, basal slip, and/or diffusional flow near the surface to dislocation and intragranular deformation at depth.

Snow Cover Effects on Glacier Ice Surface Temperature

Snowpack evolution and glacier ice surface temperatures were studied on the Indren glacier (Northwestern Alps, Italy) under different meteorological conditions: in winter 2002–2003, rich in snow from the beginning of the season, and in winter 2005– 2006, poor in snow until February. Periodical snow profiles were made to measure the physical properties of snow, while data loggers measured the sn...

Submarine melting at the terminus of a temperate tidewater glacier, LeConte Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A

Heat, freshand sea-water balances indicate that the late-summer rate of submarine melting at the terminus of tidewater LeConte Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., in 2000 was about 12mdw.e., averaged over the submerged face. This is 57% of the estimated total ice loss at the terminus (calving plus melting) at this time. Submarine melting may thus providea significantcontribution to the overall ablationof ...

Stress-Assisted Isothermal Martensitic Transformation Application to TRIP Steels

Low-temperature plastic flow in TRIP steels has been found to be controlled by stress-assisted isothermal martensitic transformation. For these conditions, the thermodynamics and kinetic theory of martensitic transformations leads directly to constitutive relations predicting the dependence of flow stress on temperature, strain, strain-rate, and stress-state, consistent with the observed behavi...

Modeling the Controls on the Front Position of a Tidewater Glacier in Svalbard

Calving is an important mass-loss process at ice sheet and marine-terminating glacier margins, but identifying and quantifying its principal driving mechanisms remains challenging. Hansbreen is a grounded tidewater glacier in southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, with a rich history of field and remote sensing observations. The available data make this glacier suitable for evaluating mechanisms and c...

Maximum angle method for determining mixed layer depth from seaglider data

A new maximum angle method has been developed to determine surface mixed-layer (a general name for isothermal/constant-density layer) depth from profile data. It has three steps: (1) fitting the profile data with a first vector (pointing downward) from an upper level to a depth and a second vector (pointing downward) from that depth to a deeper level; (2) identifying the angle (varying with dep...
